The annual Horwich Festival of Racing will double in size this year thanks to support from
This year’s event will take place over two days – on Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19
– meaning there will be a packed weekend of sport for residents to enjoy.
A whole new programme of mass participation, elite running and cycling events will take
place on Saturday (June 18).
And there will be the usual packed programme of Sunday activities including: youths and veterans cycling and running; orienteering; a triathlon, and the National Unicycle Road Race.
With more on-site music and family entertainment this should be a fun weekend for all of the family to enjoy.
Horwich Festival of Racing is now in its 15th year and is also supported by Horwich Town Council as well as other local sponsors.
Last year around 800 competitors took part in the Horwich Festival of Racing to swim, run, cycle and navigate their way around Horwich in Bolton.
The Festival has a strong heritage as a proving ground for cyclists who have gone on to success on the Olympic and world stages including local hero Jason Kenny, Laura Trott, Lizzie Armistead and Dame Sarah Storey.
President of the Festival, Barbara Ronson, said: “I am thrilled that we are able to run events on the Saturday as well this year. It’s a great opportunity for youngsters to take part and it will draw many more people into the town.”
Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris, added: “Since it began in 2002, Horwich Festival of Racing has grown to become one of the most popular sporting events in the North West and we’re really pleased to be supporting it.
“Investing in sports at a grassroots level is key to encouraging all ages – especially young people – to get involved in sport and improve their fitness and overall health.”
The draft programme is available on the Festival website www.horwichfestivalofracing.co.uk where residents can also register their interest in taking part in the event.
