A new solar system will be created as the Manchester Day audience are invited to make an interstellar neighbourhood in Albert Square on Sunday, 19 June. The interactive ‘Select Your Universe’ activity will give families the chance to create new cosmic communities with the help of Manchester Day’s principal sponsor Select Property Group.

Through the afternoon of Manchester Day, the mobile universe will take shape as more and more people design and add their unique elements until, by the end of the day, a collaboratively made 3D cosmos creation will fill part of the square – with Manchester at its centre.

Top artists will be on-hand to help crowds create the newest intergalactic masterpiece that celebrates this year’s Manchester theme – EUREKA! – chosen after Manchester was named the European City of Science 2016.

This galactic corner of Albert Square will also feature live street theatre bringing the new universe to life – along with regular visits from Manchester Day’s very own time travelling robot explorer, Albot²!

Manchester Day 2015 Manchester Day was created in 2010 and has now become one of the North West’s flagship events of the summer. The purpose of Manchester Day is to celebrate the creativity and diversity of Manchester. Where communities can celebrate pride in our city and show what makes them feel uniquely Mancunian. Where communities, artists and businesses can work together to create something truly special for Manchester. The creative process that makes Manchester Day such a spectacular event is curated by Walk the Plank – internationally renowned outdoor arts experts. Walk the Plank guide and steer participating groups in realising their ideas generated by the event theme.

Albert Square, along with other squares across the city centre – including Great Northern Square, St Ann’s Square and Exchange Square – will come alive on Manchester Day with a thrilling variety of performance, music and delicious street food.

Cllr Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: “You can’t turn a corner during Manchester Day and not be faced with something mad and brilliant. I love the idea that everyone can muck in and have a go and I’ll be adding my own piece to the new universe that we’re creating – with Manchester at the centre, of course.

“Manchester Day is a hugely ambitious event and we couldn’t do it without the support of community minded sponsors who want to make the city a remarkable place to be. For that, I thank them.”

Talking about the day, Mark Stott, CEO of Select Property Group, said:

“It’s great to see so many of the city’s communities come together to celebrate Manchester Day and we’re delighted to be a part of it this year. It promises to be a fantastic family day out and the Select team are looking forward to getting involved and helping visitors build a spectacular cosmos creation.”

Manchester Day can only happen with the support of generous sponsors. This year Select Property Group join the celebration for the first time as principal sponsor. They are also joined by Laing O’Rourke, Allied London, Biffa, Galliford Try, Wates Construction, G4S, Redgates, NCP, Keepmoat, Turner Townsend and The Great Northern.

Manchester Day’s media partners are the Manchester Evening News and Global Radio.
