Film Review: Ghostbusters (2016)

Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) is an author who lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University. Her job doesn’t last very long however, when a book she wrote a few years before, positing that ghosts are real, resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. But when mysterious apparitions invade Manhattan, Gilbert reunites with her writing partner, Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), as well as nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), and subway worker Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones), to save the world from a powerful demon known as Rowan.
Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy headline this laugh-stuffed reboot of the comedy classic. Look out for cameos from original stars Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts. Also keep your eyes peeling for a scene-stealing Chris Hemsworth as the girls’ male bimbo receptionist, Kevin.

So Plot wise…(You guessed it) That`s all you are getting….. So what did we think of it?

I was AMAZED!  Simply amazed! The film has had a lot of controversy even before it was released about the Ghostbusters being women but the gender swaps work seriously well. The cast have really taken to their roles and you can tell that they actually ENJOY the roles and how much passion they have for them. The film itself is a TOTAL reboot of the GB Universe but with enough of the Original Film`s energy, jokey style and (of course- Tech) to challenge the”Reboots are always awful” rule brigade into liking it. Every now and again a Reboot comes along that is an exception to that rule and i am really , really , really happy to say that Ghostbusters is one of those exceptions. Star of the show is Kate McKinnon`s “Holtzman” for me personally but me and Sam (My Son in law) both agreed that it was a sterling effort from all of them.

The special effects are seriously cleverly done and a lot of attention to detail has gone into them and of course into The Ghosts.(You really have to see it to understand the level of special effects employed really do)

Paul Feig’s reboot not only pays tribute to the 80s original with some great fan in-jokes and cameos – but it’s a brand new Ghostbusters universe, full of comedy (Sometimes a “bit” crude) it has a decent plot and some awesome special effects and newly realised tech and quite frankly…. it ROCKS!

If you are an original Ghostbusters fan go watch it… even if you have reservations and if you are new to the whole Ghostbusters Genre then you have to go see it too.

My verdict- ★★★★½

Ghostbusters is rated 12A
