Frank`s Blog: A sunny day at Moss Bank Park Walled Garden

I went out for a stroll last week, looking for a spot to sit under a tree to do a little whittling. As I had an appointment later in the day in Johnson Fold, I thought Moss Bank Park could be a good spot.

My idea was to sit in the Hive somewhere but it was closed. What I did find open was the Rock Garden, somewhere I’d not visited for a few years.

It was gorgeous in there!

RockGarden-20160719_114837bI’d got quite a bit of work done in this quiet, secluded garden when a group of people turned up, obviously maintaining the place. They left me to myself (possibly because it was a fella sat there surrounded with a selection of chisels and knives!) but, as my meeting later was with Pete (our Editor), I had on my mind the blog I was supposed to be writing on Community Groups around Bolton, I decided that I would disturb them!

They turned out to be the Friends of Moss Bank Park, a group that had been set up to care for these gardens.

It turns out that they meet up every Tuesday morning at 10am to care for this and the Walled Garden close by, they are usually there ’till about mid-day.

They have been doing this for a few years now, the results of which are an amazing sight. I was especially taken with the bridge they’d installed.

Pop along some time and breathe in the tranquillity of this little spot, even better, turn up on a Tuesday morning and lend a hand with its upkeep, you can find the group on Facebook at

But please remember, leave the place tidy, there is a litter bin!
