Bolton people…Wave needs you!!!

The Bolton based charity WAVE Adventure needs the help of Bolton people! They need keen volunteers to support our sessions – and they also need businesses to make the most of their corporate teambuilding sessions and activity days, which helps to fund their core activities.

WAVE Adventure offer outdoor activities for people across Greater Manchester and Lancashire. These include kayaking and canoeing, rock climbing and mountain biking – and a host of other adventures such as bouldering, orienteering, family treasure hunts and more.

They work with people and groups who aren’t normally able to access the sort of activities that they provide – these include vulnerable adults as well as young people and children. Their highly experienced and enthusiastic team work with young people, those in recovery from addiction, ex-offenders, people with mental health issues or disabilities and many other groups. WAVE can create a session or programme to suit any particular group’s needs and will work with small or larger groups, and at their own pace.

They also have equipment that supports our mission to be as diverse and inclusive as possible – for instance their sit-on-top kayaks, generously donated by Warburtons and Bolton CVS, allow people with disabilities or impaired vision to have safe fun out on the water.

They have run sessions for local groups including Bolton Young Persons Housing Scheme, Fort Alice, Bolton Integrated Alcohol and Drugs Service (BIDAS) as well as on behalf of Greater Manchester Probation Service. They also work with local schools and mosques and can provide women only and other group-specific sessions.

They are currently running a project funded by BBC Children in Need, which involves kayaking, mountain biking, orienteering and climbing sessions for young people aged 9-18. These sessions are very low cost in order to allow a broad reach of people to access them. They urge people to enquire about booking on these sessions and to visit our website or Facebook page to find out when and where they are being held and how to get involved. (contact details are below.)

Corporate offer

They also work with local businesses and organisations. Our outdoor activities, team building and confidence boosting courses are excellent for employee development and encouraging workplace cohesion. Engaging in sports is well known to combat stress and ill health: we want to encourage people to develop ‘healthy habits for life’ and will work hard to offer regular opportunities to take part in exciting adventurous activities. By using their services, local businesses can gain satisfaction in the knowledge they are helping to fund the core activities, enabling us to reach more vulnerable people.

At WAVE they are passionate about the service we provide because they have seen firsthand the huge benefits taking part in WAVE activities can have as they have watched people learn to overcome fears and develop new skills and talents!

They want more people to join WAVE and help them to deliver their services to a wider pool of users. They need people of all ages who are interested in helping others and either already have qualifications in (or are looking to train) in climbing or kayaking. Whether people can offer one day a week or an afternoon a month or can do weekends or evenings they encourage all enquiries. The more volunteers we have the more sessions they can hold and we are focused on developing our timetable of activities to encourage participation.

WAVE are hosting a recruitment evening on Thursday 25th August from 5pm until 9pm which will comprise two parts: a training rock climbing session at Wilton Quarry, Bolton from 5pm until 7pm, followed by induction training from 7.30 until 9pm, where volunteers will be given information on WAVE Adventure, volunteering and safeguarding and will also be registered for DBS checks. This will take place at Friends Meeting House, Silverwell Street, Bolton, BL1 1PP. They would love people to make enquiries and find out more about them and how they may be able to help!
