This festive season the Octagon Theatre brings to life one of the greatest fairy-tales of all time in a magical, fun and feisty re-telling of Cinderella, from Friday 18 November until Saturday 14 January.
It’s got all the traditional elements for a fabulous festive treat – a feisty girl who dreams of dressing up and dancing, a wicked stepmother, mean older sisters, and a slightly geeky Prince – but this Cinderellahas one big difference. The rats are in charge. Whiskers, Tail, Teeth, Ears and Claws take us on a journey to a fairy-tale ending, with live music, dancing, and lots of singing!
Cinderella is adapted by award-winning writer for children, Mike Kenny. Mike was included in the Independent on Sunday’s list of Top Ten Living Playwrights and his plays are performed regularly throughout the UK and all over the world. His adaptation of The Railway Children won an Olivier Award for Best Entertainment.
Directing this year’s festive production is Octagon Theatre’s Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme Resident Assistant Director, Ben Occhipinti (RTYDS Resident Assistant Director: Directed#chipshopthemusical, and has worked on Singin’ in the Rain, The BFG, An Enemy of the People, Octagon Theatre; As Composer: To Kill a Mockingbird, Piaf, Private Lives, The Family Way). Ben will bring together a cast of talented actors, who are also very talented musicians, all making their debut to the Octagon stage this winter.
Playing the central role of Cinderella will be Lucy Faint (Measure for Measure, Demi-Paradise; Mother Goose, Salisbury Playhouse 2014; The Hundred and One Dalmations, The New Vic Stoke). Lucy will be joined by Alexander Bean (Robin Hood & the Babes in the Wood – The Rock’n’Roll Panto, City Varities Music Hall; Teddy, Southwark Playhouse), Alicia McKenzie (In the Night Garden, Minor Entertainment Ltd; Macbeth, Infinite Jest; Snow White, Tour De Force 2015), Anne O’Riordan (Doctors, Call the Midwife, BBC; Alice, Theatre in the Quarter; Grease, Robert Shaw Cameron), Felicity Sparks (Bobbin, Tea Break Theatre; Macbeth, Guildford Shakespeare Company; Snow Queen, Tea Break Theatre) and Tomas Wolstenholme (Can’t Buy Me Love, Salisbury Playhouse; Off, Westminster Film School; The London 50 Hour Improvathon, The London Jam).
On the production, director Ben Occhipinti said: “For this year’s festive show, we will be telling a very familiar fairy-tale story – but with a big twist! The talented team of actors who will be playing the rats are all fantastic musicians, so this will be a production filled with music and dance, with plenty of joy for families to experience and join in with. Get ready to enter the fairy-tale world in a whole new way!”
Cinderella is playing from Friday 18 November 2016 to Saturday 14 January 2017.
