Bolton History Centre is inviting visitors to join them at their new premises for a number of free events in the New Year.
On Saturday, January 28, Civic Voice will host a workshop for people interested in war memorials and their preservation.
Civic Voice is a national charity for the civic movement in England and during the workshop they will train volunteers how to assess the condition of memorials and take steps to preserve them in the correct way.
The History Centre has a new permanent base on the ground floor in Central Library to make way for work to the museum’s new Egyptology gallery, Eternal Egypt.
The centre has been working on a project with volunteers to record and research all war memorials in the borough as part of the centenary commemorations for the First World War.
This workshop will provide those volunteers, and anyone else with an interest in history, with useful skills in this field.
To book a free ticket via Eventbrite, which includes refreshments, click HERE. The workshop runs from 9.45am to 2pm.
On Saturday, February 11 the centre is holding a family history day in partnership with Bolton Family History Society.
The session runs from 10am to 4pm and will give people the chance to trace their family tree.
Archives staff and members of Bolton Family History Society will be on hand to give advice.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Youth and Sport, Cllr John Byrne, said: “The History Centre has moved downstairs to Central Library so we can create our new Egyptology exhibition. Its new location is working out really well, and we’ve already seen some new visitors who just happen to be in the library.
“The room is light and airy, with plenty of room, and this gives us more space to hold events like this. If anyone has even the slightest interest in history I would recommend they take advantage of these free events. They’re a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn new skills.”
