Bolton West MP Chris Green is backing a group’s application to protect Bolton Wanderers’ ground.

The MP, whose constituency includes Wanderers’ Macron Stadium, has written a letter to Bolton Council in support of Bolton Wanderers’ Supporters Trust application to make the ground an asset of community value (ACV).

If the Macron was given ACV status, it would mean that the Trust would have some degree of input should any current or future owners wish to sell the stadium.  It comes after Coventry City were forced to play from Northampton – a 70-mile round trip – following financial difficulties.

The MP commented:

“The club has had a difficult 12 months, but there is now plenty of optimism amongst Wanderers fans for the rest of the season.

“Nevertheless, it is important that we do everything to make sure the club remains at the heart of the community, which is why I’m supporting the Trust’s application to make the Macron an asset of community value.

“Should the ground at any point by sold, having asset of community value status would be vital in ensuring that Wanderers are able to continue to play home games here.

“Having been based in the town since the 19th century, it is very important that we maintain this link as any sale of the stadium could potentially force the club out of Bolton – a concern not just for football fans, but all those who rely on Wanderers fan.”
