Liverpool housewife Shirley`s (Jodie Prenger) kids have left home and she makes chips and egg for her husband while talking to the wall.
Where has her life disappeared to?
Out of the blue, her best friend offers her a trip to Greece for 2 weeks and she secretly packs her bags. She heads for the sun and starts to see the world and herself very differently.
This heartwarming comedy first premiered in 1986 and took the theatre world by storm and (quite rightly) is referred to as a national treasure
( It was even adapted into an Oscar Nominated film!)
The sets were simple yet effective and really helped to bring the whole story to life
Jodie Prenger was quite simply brilliant!
Her portrayal of Shirley will live with me for many years to come. The Lowry was quite simply a sell out and the audience hung on every word from Jodie (Quite a mean feat as yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far!). Her stage presence is so commanding and believable it is very hard to get the point across how good she actually was, I think the standing ovation she received at the end of the show should go some way to explaining just how much i think you should see this solo tour de force!
Quite simply unmissable!
In my humble opinion Jodie Prenger is a remarkable talent and her performance as Shirley is spot on! I thoroughly recommend that you catch Shirley Valentine at The Lowry before its run ends (See booking Link below). The show is still a National Treasure but i think it is even more so in my opinion after seeing Jodie`s performance.
Shirley Valentine runs at The Lowry until Saturday 24th June. Book tickets here: https://www.thelowry.com/events/shirley-valentine
